 It's Official!

Published 3/12/2003 - Career

In-House Internet Solutions officially exists as of Monday, March 10, 2003 1:30 PM. In-House Internet Solutions (IIS) is the company that Dawn's dad (Phil), her mom (Margaret), Dawn and I have started as a means of someday earning a living doing something we (or at least I) love. Phil and I came up with the idea after reading an article in USA Today a few months ago about how 80% of small businesses in America don't have websites (though they may want one). Many just don't have the know-how, don't have employees that have the know-how or can't afford to hire the big companies that do have the know-how. In comes IIS. We provide the in-house internet/web development and support a small business needs but can't afford to hire the full time staff to provide. We'll cater to the local mom & pop and small businesses in our area. Phil and I will handle the technical stuff (designing and building the websites) and Margaret and Dawn will handle most of the day-to-day operational and sales areas. We're just getting started, but we believe the market and need exists out there. No matter what happens, it will certainly be a fun learning experience!

That was a nICE break ;o)

Published 2/27/2003 - Career

Get it? NICE? North Central Texas was covered in ice Monday evening. As a result, Dawn and I haven't had to be anywhere, including classes since then. So, we had a nice 2 day break! It was nice (ok, I didn't mean the pun that time ;o)
However, today we are back in our groove of things. I've received my materials from LSU for my correspondence course in Human Resource Management (yuck). But oh well, I just need to get through it as well as possible. Unfortunately, it looks like I wont' get my book for at least another week ~ we'll see how that goes.
Otherwise, not too much else is going on.
Well, ok, there is one thing. We're going to try to start a small business. Just in case the whole Air Force thing falls through (and maybe even if it doesnt't). Dawn's dad, Phillip, her mom, Margaret, Dawn and I are starting up a business that designs, creates, and publishes websites for local small businesses. We know it will be difficult to launch such a business, but we're hoping that our low overhead will allow us to underprice most competitors and not scare away any technoligically challenged business owners. Initially, it was just Phillip and I that were starting this thing up, but we decided that with all the time we'll need to put into the actual designing and programming for the sites, we'll need others to handle the financial and operational aspects of the business ~ enter Dawn and Margaret. Plus, we all have always gotten along wonderfully, and it will be fun learning new things together (maybe Phil and I won't get as much eye-rolling and "yes dear" 's with the ladies involved in the whole thing).
Plus, the new laptop(s) are pretty cool too ;o)

 . . . Early To Rise

Published 2/21/2003 - Career

Well, that's one less thing I have to worry about now. This morning (and I mean MORNING) I took the AFOQT (Air Force Officer Qualifying Test) in Dallas. I got up at 3 am, left the house at 4 am, arrived at the Federal Building in downtown Dallas at 5 am, started the exam at 6 am, completed the exam at 11 am, and now am home at 12 pm. I'm going to go take a nap.

 Feels Good To Work!

Published 5/31/2002 - Career

Feels good to earn a paycheck again! We've been working with Burnett's Staffing, Inc. for about a week or so now, and so far, so good! I spent three days doing data entry (extremely boring. . .but beggars can't be choosers!) while Dawn had a great time working at the American Airlines Pilots Union (I was a little jealous!). However, while Dawn spent a few days working admin at the Pepsi plant (I know, I know), I've been working in-house at Burnett's working as their IT guy! I'll let you know how it goes!
