The project, coordinated by fourth-grade teacher Christine Paradise and Destiny Warrior, a teacher of gifted and talented students, calls for each participant to master 26 math skills, learn 26 reading skills or read 26 books and run 26.2 miles.
The project winds up April 25, the day of the Oklahoma City Memorial Kids’ Marathon.
One goal is to "get the kids involved in more physical activities,” Paradise said.
Running is a natural fit, Paradise said. "They love to do it anyway.”
Students are running and working on their skills gradually.
"They can run at any time,” Paradise said. They are keeping journals on their progress, with a parent or teacher verifying that each task was completed.
Students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade are participating, she said.
An example of a fourth-grade level math task is mastery of the multiplication table, Paradise said. A reading task on the fourth-grade level might involve being able to understand inferences or main ideas.
Warrior said the project was inspired by a similar event she noticed during a trip to St. Louis.
Warrior said teachers are encouraging students to "keep going and persevere in academics.”
Since the run is being broken down into smaller parts, "anyone can do it,” Warrior said. Some teachers are joining in, she said.
The grand finale will be to run the final 1.2 miles of the marathon at the Kids’ Marathon, Warrior said.
